About TEDxBellingham Square

Our mission

TEDxBellingham Square is an independently organized TEDx event bringing local voices, ideas and inspirations from Chelsea, Massachusetts to a community stage. In the spirit of Ideas Worth Spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events — including ours — are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California nearly three decades ago, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.

Why Chelsea?

Chelsea is one of Massachusetts’s most diverse and dynamic cities, located just two miles north of Boston and spanning only about 2.2 square miles — making it among the most densely populated cities in the state.

In the 2020 Census Chelsea’s population was 40,787.

  • Approximately 45 % of residents are foreign-born and nearly 70 % speak a language other than English at home.

  • More than 60 % of residents identify as Hispanic/Latino.

These facts point to Chelsea’s remarkable cultural wealth, multilingual heritage, and civic potential.

At the same time, Chelsea faces significant challenges — from economic vulnerability to youth opportunity gaps — making it the perfect setting for a TEDx event that aims to amplify innovation, hope, and local leadership.

  • The city’s “persons in poverty” rate is around 20.6 % (higher than statewide averages) and per-capita income is about $31,544 (in recent data) for Chelsea.

  • The density of population paired with many first-generation immigrant families creates both urgency and opportunity for “ideas worth spreading” about equity, access, and progress.

What to expect

TEDxBellingham Square will feature a curated lineup of speakers and performances that reflect multiple disciplines — education, community leadership, arts & culture, small business innovation, urban planning, youth voice and more. Our half-day event in Spring 2027 will be held at a venue that supports accessibility, inclusion, and community gathering.

We are committed to multilingual representation and invite speakers to delivery their talks in English or another non-English language (reflecting the linguistic diversity of our city). We will focus on stories rooted in Chelsea but with relevance beyond our city limits.

Our values

  • Inclusion & equity: We prioritize voices from across all backgrounds, especially those under‐represented in traditional platforms.

  • Local impact with global resonance: Each idea we present is rooted in Chelsea but has relevance beyond our immediate community.

  • Connection & inspiration: We believe that ideas spark action when people feel seen, heard and energized.

  • Volunteer-led and community-driven: TEDxChelsea is powered by local talent, partnerships and service.
